This reminds me that I've been meaning to read some of the articles about research suggesting that our brains have a set 5 stages during our lives.
When I was young, a father & an active addict, & knowing that her mom would have her own perspective about our relationship & what sort of person I was (& was convinced I'd be dead by 24), I started writing, to leave a record in my own words.
I developed a habit of writing as soon as I could after any important event or experience, & later, after a week or so, I would read what I wrote & then write what I thought then. I've kept that up, but it had been a long time since I read the older stuff, & some of it has been funny, sometimes I have no idea why so many people cared about me, cuz I was clearly fkd up, but reading a lot of the old handwritten letters with various people has been pretty cool.
I think that's a great habit. I try to journal about my life as well. Helps me focus my thoughts. And yeah, that window into your past mind can be fascinating and/or frightening. Thanks for sharing.
